A mouth guard is a removable dental prosthesis made of resilient material which is useful in reducing mouth injuries and protecting the teeth and surrounding structures from injury. The use of a mouth guard is indicated when playing sports because accidents can happen during any physical activity. Sports with a high risk of mouth-related injuries to patients’ teeth, lips, tongue and soft tissues are:

The use of mouth guards can prevent the oral soft tissues, lips and tongue from injuries and chipped and broken teeth can be avoided. A mouth guard is highly recommended as a protection when patients are under orthodontic treatment or have fixed or removable prostheses in their mouth.

Mouth guards fit usually on the maxillary teeth but if it is needed or indicated (i.e. during an orthodontic treatment) they can fit on the teeth of the lower jaw (mandibular teeth).
